History

A school has been on this site for the past 200 years, with Richmal Mangnall

Richmal Mangnall

Richmal Mangnall was an English schoolmistress. She was born, probably, at Manchester.She was a pupil and finally mistress of a school at Crofton Hall in Crofton, West Yorkshire, near Wakefield, Yorkshire, which she conducted most successfully until her death there on 1 May 1820...

 opening the Crofton school for young ladies, in the Crofton old hall, which is now part of the schools complex. The old high school was built in 1964, after the village rapidly expanded and saw a huge housing boom, which needed the demand for a large school. Many estates such as Manorfields, Meadowfields and Ashdene were built at this time, needing the demand for more schools. The school suffered a serious fire in August 1995, whilst headteacher Mr Myers was on holiday in the French Riviera

. The school was rebuilt on the same site, and opened on 30 October 1998. Known as Crofton High School until 1 August 2011 when it became an Academy.

The school today

Today, Crofton has roughly 1,020 pupils on roll, many coming from Crofton, and neighbouring villages such as Walton, Sharlston, Ryhill, Streethouse and Normanton. In 2005, assistant headteacher Jez Horsley took over after Mr Myers retired and in the summer of 2007, the school received its best GCSE results yet, putting it in the top 100 secondary schools in the country.
