- 22 September 1989: The route commenced service in accordance with the opening of Eastern Harbour Tunnel. First with the number 106E, soon after it was renumbered 404, and with the establishment of the common prefix "6" on all Eastern Harbour Tunnel bus routes, it was proposed to be renumbered 666. However, "666" was unpopular with the public, so it was never used.
