History

The cemetery was opened in 1876. Croydon Cemetery is perhaps most famous for the finally successful fight of Derek Bentley

's family to have "A Victim of British Justice" inscribed on his gravestone, controversially hanged in 1953. Aside from this, two extensions to the original ground have left the cemetery as a memorial to its ongoing place in the community: a sweeping tree-lined drive leads to a modern chapel and crematorium block with paved landscaping, which gradually gives way to the Victorian original, with its own chapel and a number of angels.

The cemetery is located on the west edge of the Croydon borough and is not well connected by public transport, although inside the cemetery there is an extensive network of roads suitable for cars. London Buses route 264 stops outside the cemetery and is the best bus to get there.
