He studied amongst others at the Universities of London and Cambridge.
His main work is "Limba engleză fără professor" (Leaning English Without a Teacher), published in several editions, it being one of the most widely used English language books used by Romanians.

He is the father of Taina Duţescu-Coliban, a Romanian linguist and mountain climber who went missing in 1992 while trying to climb Mt. Dhaulaghiri.
