He was born near Białystok and died in Vilnius

In 1968 he won the Olympic gold medal in the light heavyweight class.
His family moved to Vilnius in the 1950s. From 1959 to 1966 he trained at the Armed Forces sports society, and from 1968 to 1969 for Trudovye Rezervy
