After going 29-15 in his first two MLB seasons, Fleming began to struggle with arm trouble. On 7 July 1995, he was traded by the Mariners to the Kansas City Royals for Bob Milacki
. He pitched only 9 games for the Royals before undergoing surgery, and never pitched in the Major Leagues again.
As of 2008, Fleming teaches fifth grade at an elementary school in Seymour, Connecticut
. He also coaches the Southbury
Cool Whips in the American Wiffle Ball League, where he has led his team to five consecutive Wiffle Ball championships.
Fleming lives with wife Ivy and two daughters Taylor and Peyton. He has two dogs named Kisses and Bubbles. Taylor and Peyton's best friends are Casey, Scout B. and Jillian Hutchinson.
