Mackay's first season was one to forget. 2007 started promisingly with a superb performance in the SANFL reserves seeing him rewarded with senior SANFL selection, where he again impressed. However, early in his second match he tore his hamstring, an injury that recurred throughout the year and prevented him from playing another game.

Mackay made his debut for Adelaide during round one of the 2008 Premiership season in their loss to the Western Bulldogs. His first goal in AFL football came in his thirteenth match, in round 17 against the Sydney Swans
