David Michie OBE
RSA
is a painter who was born in 1928 in the South of France, and brought up in the Scottish Borders
. After national service service as an instructor in the Royal Artillery Signals Training regiment (1946 to 1948) he studied at Edinburgh College of Art
from 1949 to 1953, where he was taught by William Gillies
, and then won a travelling scholarship to Italy. Later he taught at the College, from 1982 to 1990 as Head of the Drawing and Painting Department, and he is now an Honorary Vice-President. In 1979 he was Visiting Artist at the University of the Arts in Belgrade. In 1991 he went to the University of California
at Santa Barbara as Visiting Professor. He was awarded an OBE in the New Year of 1997.
Some of his paintings reflect his travels in the USA and Australia. Favourite subjects include birds, Nature, and people in the street. He works in oils or watercolour.
