David Nicolle worked for the BBC Arabic Service before getting his MA at the School of African Oriental Studies. He gained a PHD in Edinburgh University. His interest in the medieval world was shown in the number of books and articles he has written to teach World and Islamic art and architectural history at Yarmouk University in Jordan.

He married an American, Colette Giroux in 1976; they have a son Frederick Joseph ("Fred", born 1982) and a daughter Antoinette Laura ("Nette", born 1985). He now lives and works in Woodhouse Eaves
