. Alfred was their eldest and only surviving son. Nutt was a close associate of Nicholas Trübner. He founded his publishing firm in 1829 at 58 Fleet Street, London. It moved in 1848 to 270–271 Strand. The business was mainly confined to foreign bookselling, though it expanded considerably under the direction of his son to include works of folklore and antiquities.
