Hanworth was educated at Wellington College
and has taken a Doctorate of Philosophy (DPhil) at the University of Sussex
. He is currently Professor
of Econometrics
and Computational Statistics at the University of Leicester
, where he lectures in Mathematical Statistics, Econometrics and Environmental Sciences. He has been elected a Fellow of the Econometric Society.
The Hon
Stephen Pollock succeeded to the title (of Hanworth) upon his father's death in 1996, and sat in the House of Lords until the passing of the House of Lords Act
in 1999 removed his automatic right to a seat.
Hanworth did not stand as a candidate in the election by the Labour hereditary peers of 2 of their number to continue to sit after this Act came into force. He was unsuccessful in the by-election caused by the death of 2nd Lord Milner of Leeds
in 2003. In 2011 he returned to the House after winning the by-election to replace 11th Lord Strabolgi
.
He and his wife, Elizabeth, daughter of Lawrence Vambe MBE
