Southern Utah University corner back DeWayne Lewis has been named this week's Great West Football Conference Defensive Player of the Week 3 times for his play in the Thunder birds' game at Montana State Saturday.
Lewis is a 5-foot-11, 191-pound corner back transfer from Michigan State University
. Tallied eight tackles against the Thunderbirds' near-upset of No. 13 ranked Montana State. Lewis had five solo stops, two sacks and was in on three tackles-for-loss in the 7-3 setback. He also forced a fumble and broke up a pass on third down late in the game as the Bobcats were trying to run out the clock to force a punt and give the Thunderbirds a chance to come back. Lewis played two seasons in the NFL after a standout college career at Southern Utah. He was taken in the seventh round by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2009, playing parts of that season and the next with Jacksonville before signing with the Cincinnati Bengals. A two-year starter at Southern Utah, he posted 51 tackles and one interception his senior season.
The IFAF Senior World Championship is an eight-nation football tournament held every four years since 1999. Games will be played in Graz, Innsbruck and Vienna. The U.S. defeated Japan, 23-20, in double overtime in Tokyo, Japan, to win the 2007 tournament, the first that included Team USA.
