Deborah Spungen is the mother of Nancy Spungen

Her autobiography tells not only about raising Nancy, whom she had at twenty and also describes Nancy as disturbed from a young age, but also her life following Nancy's murder in regard to her and her family's treatment by the judicial system and the press. She began the Philadelphia-based nonprofit FMV, Families of Murder Victimshttp://www.avpphila.org/fmv.html, soon after Nancy's death in order to cope with her tragedy, and later obtained a Master's Degree in Social Work from Bryn Mawr College

Having recently undergone major surgery, Spungen has been in poor health and it was reported that she is not even well enough to have a phone conversation.
Spungen's husband, Frank died on July 2, 2010 at the age of 76. In addition to Nancy, the couple had two other children, Susan and David.

Deborah Spungen, born in Philadelphia, has been the owner of a natural foods store, a direct mail consultant, a member of the Philadelphia Crime and Elderly Coalition, and founded the Philadelphia chapter of Parents of Murdered Children.In 1998, she wrote another book, Homicide: The Hidden Victims.
