Hannon was educated at Scoil Naomh Íosaf before later attending Ardscoil Rís
. It was here that he first came to prominence on the hurling field under the guidance of teacher and inter-county hurler Niall Moran
. He was one of the stars of the Ardscoil Rís team that secured the Harty Cup
title in 2010 following an epic three-game series against reigning All-Ireland champions Thurles CBS. He later lined out in the All-Ireland final
against St. Kieran's College, however, Ardscoil Rís were narrowly beaten by 2-11 to 2-8.
In 2011 Hannon was joint-captain of the Ardscoil Rís team that retained the Harty Cup title following a crushing defeat of Charleville CBS
. The subsequent All-Ireland final saw St. Kieran's take on Hannon's side for the second year in succession, however, Ardscoil Rís were once again defeated on a score line of 2-10 to 1-11.
