Encyclopedia
Deinodon is a name assigned to tyrannosaurid
teeth of the Late Cretaceous
of Montana
by paleontologist Joseph Leidy
in 1856.http://dml.cmnh.org/1996Jun/msg00166.html These were the first tyrannosaurid remains to be described.
Although it is likely that these fossilized teeth belonged to the dinosaur later identified as Gorgosaurus libratus
, it is virtually impossible to distinguish between different tyrannosaurid species based on tooth characteristics alone, so Deinodon is today considered a nomen dubium
.
