Delaware Route 286, also known as Bethel Church Road, is a short, 1.73 miles (2.8 km) two-lane roadway that, along with Maryland Route 286
and Delaware Route 15
, forms a link between Chesapeake City, Maryland
and Summit, Delaware. Although primarily a rural route, DE Rt. 286 has seen an influx of residential developments due to the impacts of both the widening of U.S. Route 301
/Delaware Route 896 and the completion of the Delaware Route 1 Turnpike. DE Rt. 286 is one of several routes in Delaware that does not fit into the State Highway System (based on that of the U.S. Highway System), as DE Rt. 286 is a much newer designation, using the same route number as MD Rt. 286.

History
By 1920 what is now DE 286 existed as an unimproved county road. The road was paved by 1936 and served as part of the route between Summit Bridge and Chesapeake City, Maryland. It became a part of Road 433 by 1988 when DelDOT assigned maintenance numbers to its roads. DE 286 was designated onto its current alignment by 1994, serving as a continuation of MD 286.Major intersections
