Derek Lyle is a Scottish
footballer who is currently playing for Hamilton Academical
.
in 1999 but after struggling to hold down a first team spot he went out on loan to East Stirlingshire
and then Queen of the South
. While there Queens lifted the Scottish Football League Second Division
title in 2001/02 and the Scottish Challenge Cup the season after. Lyle was one of the scorers in the final along with John O'Neill
. A six goal tally in only thirteen games sealed a permanent move to Dumfries where he went on to make a further 113 appearances netting 23 goals. The striker was not always a regular in the side and had loan spells at Stirling Albion
and Dunfermline Athletic
. After being told by QOS boss Ian McCall
that he wasn't first choice at Palmerston he decided to move on. Lyle made an instant impact after joining Dundee
from Queens in August 2006 scoring on his debut in a 3–0 win over Clyde
. In his first season at Dundee Lyle was the clubs top goalscorer with 12 goals in 26 games.
Lyle joined Hamilton Academical
in July 2008 after his new team secured promotion to the SPL, having beaten Lyle's previous team to promotion. Lyle suffered a serious knee ligament injury in the first minute of the club's 0–0 draw with Falkirk on 19 September 2009. He underwent a successful operation a week later, but would not play again in the 2009–10 season. He signed a short-term contract extension in August 2010, and made his first team return later that month.
In January 2011, Lyle signed a short term deal with Greenock Morton
which saw him through to the end of the 2010-11 season.
Lyle scored the 5th goal of his Morton career on March 5, 2011 in a 3-1 away win against Dunfermline
, when after 35 seconds of play, a 3-way mix up in the Pars defence allowed Lyle to slot a meek 18 yard shot into the bottom corner.
Lyle was released at the end of the season.
On 17 July 2011 it was confirmed that Lyle had signed a short term contract to return to Hamilton Academical.
, as part of Operation Neptune, on suspicion of possession of controlled substances at his home in Bishopbriggs
. This later was confirmed to be "possession with intent to supply", a much more serious charge for which he and partner Nicola Mullen (29) were released on bail pending full committal.
