Richard Wertheim, known as Dick Wertheim, was an American
tennis
linesman who suffered a fatal injury on 10 September 1983 during a match at the 1983 US Open.
He died from blunt cranial trauma as a result of his injury, after Stefan Edberg
sent an errant serve directly into his groin
, causing him to fall and hit his head on the pavement. He was unconscious when he was removed to Flushing Hospital and Medical Center.
Wertheim died on September 15. His family later sued the United States Tennis Association
for $2.25 million.
