Discovery Girls
Encyclopedia
Discovery Girls magazine is an American
preteen
magazine
for girls ages 8 and up. Their first issue was published in fall 2000, and as of 2011 Discovery Girls now features two magazines, the original edition titled Discovery Girls for ages 8 and up along with now their new Discovery Girls Middle-School Edition for ages 11 and up. The magazine features 12 girls from each state
who are not professional models. Discovery Girls also covers the Provinces and territories of Canada. Discovery Girls motto is "created by girls, for girls".
Discovery Girls founding editor is Catherine Lee; who is also the Creative Art Director
. The magazine's other contributors are: Sarah Verney, Ashley DeGree, Gloria Jeong, Shirley Patino, and Alex Saymo.
For each issue they travel to a different state and work with 12 girls—Discovery Girls—on putting together that issue. Once decided to visit a state, they notify subscribers from the area and post the information on their web site, DiscoveryGirls.com. To be considered, girls fill out and submit a questionnaire (you can see one version on the web site). They look for girls who have something interesting to say, who have enthusiasm, personality, and a certain spark that they think readers will relate to; they also try to choose girls who will be good role models for their peers.
The two pages which features the 12 girls from each state are called "Profiles" in which the girls' photos are included along with their age, dream job/hobby, and a quote. Each issue usually contains 56 pages. Some of the magazines features are: "The Worst Day," "Embarrassing Moments," "Mailbag," and "Ask Ali," "Celebrity Interviews," and others. With the exception of Celebrity Interviews, most sections are contributed to by readers of the magazine.
The girls submit writings on various sections: Embarrassing moments, Great Debate, What Would You Do? And Health & Beauty, as well as provide input on other article ideas we might be working on at that time (For example, they might ask them a question about their experiences with being caught between fighting friends, or what they are most worried about in school). They are also invited to submit longer articles, especially for our “Worst Day” series (about a difficult experience from which they’ve grown somehow). Their goal is to create a forum for girls to help each other and to show readers that whatever they might be going through, they are not alone. Discovery Girls feels it is important to give girls a voice and the opportunity to express themselves.
They have won awards from iParentingMedia.com and Parents’ Choice and are the #1 bestselling
kids magazine in Canada and are #4 on Barnes & Noble’s Children & Family list.
