It has been home to many civilisations and the surrounding area including itself is home to many Mesolithic era stone carvings and artifacts. The province has been ruled by Hittites

Diyarbakir was an early stronghold of Syriac Christianity
, and also of Armenian
Christians. Before World War I, Christian ethnic groups made up 30% of the population. Since World War I, due the massacres of the Christian population and mass imigration, only a few thousand Christians still live in the province, some in the city of Diyarbakir, and others in Assyrian and Armenian villages.
The Kurds are the predominant population. Other groups include Turks, Assyrians
