Haas was born in Hamburg, Germany to Charles Oswald Haas, a bookseller of British origin, and Margarete Maria (née Hansen). Her father was an accomplished actor in German cinema before moving to the United States. She was an important actress in German cinema in the 1930s. Although she did not appear in many U.S. films, she had a role in the high-profile Alfred Hitchcock film I ConfessI Confess (film)
