It was founded by A.C. Shanmugam under the Kannamal Educational Trust. Dr. M.G.R. Engineering College and Thai MoogaAmbagai Dental College were established in 1987 and 1991 respectively. Regrowth

Leadership of the institution was given to A.C.S. Arun Kumar pro chancellor, the son of A.C. Shanmugam, who assembled a teaching faculty. Admission are done through management quota and entrance exam conducted by the institute. He made scholarships for the scheduled caste and backward caste community as per government norms.Scholarship is given to students who are residents of Tamil Nadu. After all these difficulties, the A.C.S Medical College and Rajarajeshwari Engineering College were brought into this Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute university. The university once again rebuilt New Block, First Year Blocks and Anna Block, and student joining the university increased .
