Around the time of its incorporation Driftwood was at the center of the lumber industry and was a boomtown, with three hotels, two banks, two churches and numerous places of business, including a weekly newspaper, the Driftwood Gazette, owned by John T. Earl who was also the editor.

In the borough the population was spread out with 19.4% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 29.1% from 45 to 64, and 19.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 102.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.6 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $21,458, and the median income for a family was $44,167. Males had a median income of $32,250 versus $28,333 for females. The per capita income
