Dunny (toy)
Encyclopedia
A Dunny is a type of vinyl designer toy
created by Paul Budnitz and Tristan Eaton, and produced by Kidrobot
from 2004.
The toy is based on a rabbit figure with distinctive tubular ears. The origin of the name Dunny came from a combination of street slang and one of the early "Devil Bunny" prototypes.
The Dunny is sold in three sizes - 3", 8" and 20". The toy has three points of articulation; a 360 degree rotational head and two arms. Some come with accessories, such as a laser gun, an ice-cream cone, marker pen, Geisha fan, gas mask, a crown or a hoodie. Also packaged in the individual boxes are artist cards or stickers. These are included mainly with the annual series releases, with other, often themed, series only including a mini leaflet with the designs from that series displayed. The buying and trading of Dunny's has reached to ebay and beyond.
Dunnys from more recent series have been packaged inside a clear plastic bag in addition to the foil wrapper. In the second-hand market, this assures the buyer that the article was never on display and is in a "new" condition. With the success of vinyl toys as a medium for expression, many fans and artists have put their own design onto blank Dunnys. Specialty limited edition Artists Series are designed at least once a year.

Packaging
Most 3" Dunnys and some 8" Dunnys are normally sold as "blind assortment"; the figure is packaged inside a sealed foil wrapper, such that the buyer is not able to see which figure and accessories they are buying. Sealing the figure prevents people from opening and peeking in the boxes and buying only the figures they want. Blind boxes are sold as individual or in cases, cases normally include anywhere between 18 and 24 boxes. The case will often be designed as a point-of-sale advertising for the blind boxes in retail stores, with lids that can be folded to create a popup style advertising graphic. In addition to the main series released by Kidrobot, often special edition designs are released which may include a singular or very limited design variations in the blind assortment, an example of this would be the annual holiday Dunny release.Dunnys from more recent series have been packaged inside a clear plastic bag in addition to the foil wrapper.
