Dunthorne (crater)
Encyclopedia
Dunthorne is a small lunar
impact crater
that is located to the northwest of the small lunar mare
called Palus Epidemiarum
, in the southwest part of the Moon
's near side. It lies to the southwest of the crater Campanus
, and east of Vitello
. Due south is Ramsden
.
This crater is roughly circular and bowl-shaped, with an interior that has a higher albedo
than the surrounding terrain
. It lies in a region that has a number of rille
systems, with the Rimae Hippalus to the northwest, and the Rimae Ramsden to the south and east.
Moon
The Moon is Earth's only known natural satellite,There are a number of near-Earth asteroids including 3753 Cruithne that are co-orbital with Earth: their orbits bring them close to Earth for periods of time but then alter in the long term . These are quasi-satellites and not true moons. For more...

In the broadest sense, the term impact crater can be applied to any depression, natural or manmade, resulting from the high velocity impact of a projectile with a larger body...

Lunar mare
The lunar maria are large, dark, basaltic plains on Earth's Moon, formed by ancient volcanic eruptions. They were dubbed maria, Latin for "seas", by early astronomers who mistook them for actual seas. They are less reflective than the "highlands" as a result of their iron-rich compositions, and...

Campanus (crater)
Campanus is a lunar impact crater that is located on the southwestern edge of Mare Nubium. It forms a crater pair with Mercator just to the southeast. Along the southern rampart of Campanus is the small lunar mare named Palus Epidemiarum...

Vitello (crater)
Vitello is a lunar crater that lies along the southern edge of the small Mare Humorum, in the southwest part of the Moon's near side. It lies just to the east of the lava-flooded crater Lee. To the northeast along the edge of the lunar mare is the Rupes Kelvin, an irregular fault line. This crater...

Ramsden (crater)
Ramsden is a lunar impact crater located on the western stretch of the Palus Epidemiarum. To the east-southeast is the crater Capuanus, and to the north lies Dunthorne....

Albedo , or reflection coefficient, is the diffuse reflectivity or reflecting power of a surface. It is defined as the ratio of reflected radiation from the surface to incident radiation upon it...

Terrain, or land relief, is the vertical and horizontal dimension of land surface. When relief is described underwater, the term bathymetry is used...

Satellite craters
By convention these features are identified on lunar maps by placing the letter on the side of the crater mid-point that is closest to Dunthorne.Dunthorne | Latitude | Longitude | Diameter |
