The EFA is the heir of the first self-propelled tank invented in 1955 by the French military engineer and general Gillois Jean (born in Châteaubriant 1909), which may, for coupling to form a floating bridge. Tray Gillois which entered service in the French army in 1965, was successively adopted by the American, British and German, in a modified version of the Rhine by the company EWK. At the time of its appearance, the tray Gillois is undoubtedly a material unique in the world able to tranship vehicles to a maximum weight of 25 tons. Bridge version, it supports loads of about 50 tons. To change from version to version tank road, it takes 45 minutes and 65 minutes to form a bridge 100 meters long. Tray Gillois (the invention of Colonel is so exceptional that the machine will, which is extremely rare, the name of its inventor) avoids the heavy and bulky convoys porches, large barges brought in by road, so sensitive to attacks from the enemy . It takes about a half day to install a deck of a hundred meters, with porches that are enclosed by doors. In the 1970s, Gillois tray is ideal for transfer of non-amphibious craft as the RBA or the AMX 30.
