, giving it an overall length of 59 feet 9 inches. It featured a 3700 gallons (14,006 l) fuel tank. 36 examples of this locomotive were built, all of which were eventually acquired by Norfolk Southern.

By adding a full cowl body and a comfort cab, and also an HEP generator, the GP59 became the EMD F59PH.
