Earl Kitchener, of Khartoum
and of Broome
in the County of Kent, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom
. The titles Viscount Broome, of Broome in the County of Kent, and Baron Denton, of Denton in the County of Kent, were granted along with the earldom. The titles were created in 1914 for the famous soldier Field Marshal
Herbert Kitchener, 1st Viscount Kitchener of Khartoum
. He had previously been created Baron Kitchener of Khartoum, and of Aspall
in the County of Suffolk, in 1898, and Viscount Kitchener of Khartoum, and of the Vaal in the Colony of Transvaal and of Aspall in the County of Suffolk, in 1902.
The barony of 1898 was created with normal remainder to the heirs male of his body. However, all the other titles (that of 1902 and 1914) were created with remainder to 1) the heirs male of his body, failing which to 2) his first daughter and the heirs male of her body, failing which to 3) his other daughters and the heirs male of their bodies, failing which to 4) his elder brother Henry Elliott Chevallier Kitchener and the heirs male of his body, failing which to 5) his younger brother Lieutenant-General Sir Frederick Walter Kitchener (who was alive at the time of the 1902 creation but deceased at the time of the 1914 creations and the heirs male of his body, failing which to 6) his younger Brother Alexander Richard Kitchener and the heirs male of his body.
Lord Kitchener died unmarried and childless in 1916, which resulted in the extinction of the barony created in 1898. Regarding the other titles, he was succeeded by his elder brother, Henry Kitchener, 2nd Earl Kitchener
(1846–1937), according to the special remainder. The 2nd Earl was a Colonel
in the Army. At the present time the titles are held by his grandson, Henry Kitchener, 3rd Earl Kitchener
(born 1919). He is the eldest son of Captain Henry Franklin Chevallier Kitchener, Viscount Broome (1878-1928), and has one younger and late brother, Hon. Charles Eaton Kitchener (1920-1982), and a sister, Lady Kenya Eleanor Kitchener (born 1923). Since Viscount Broome predeceased the 2nd Earl, the titles passed to his eldest son, who succeeded in 1937. The 3rd Earl has never been married, and although his younger brother was married, he produced only one daughter (Emma Joy Kitchener, born 1963, who is a lady-in-waiting
to Princess Michael of Kent
and the wife of actor Julian Fellowes
), but no sons. There is no other male-offspring who is potentially eligible for succession of the titles: Viscount Broome had only one sister, Lady Nora Fanny Kitchener (1882-1919), and the 1st and 2nd Earls had two younger brothers and one elder sister, Arthur Buck Kitchener (1852-1907), Lt.-Gen. Sir Frederick Walter Kitchener (1858-1912) and Frances Emily Jane Kitchener (1848-1924), but without anymore of living heirs male of their body. Since the lack of a male heir, upon the death of the 3rd Earl the peerage will become extinct.
