Jurisdiction

ECU Police has a jurisdiction around the East Carolina University Main campus. They are able to investigate crimes and enforce laws within the following area. The north side of the Tar River

 is the northern boundary. From the Greene Street Bridge, going south the western boundary includes Greene Street, Reade Circle, Cotanche Street and Charles Boulevard. The south and east boundary is Greenville Boulevard going north to the northern side of the Tar River.

They also have jurisdiction around the Health Sciences campus, West Research campus, all property owned, operated and controlled by East Carolina and all adjacent streets and sidewalks.

The ECU Police Department initially became accredited on March 17, 2007 by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies

. After the three year process, the Department became the 39th nationally accredited university law enforcement agency. The Department is one of five CALEA accredited University/College Law Enforcement Agencies in North Carolina. Organization

The Police Department falls under the Office of Environmental Health & Campus Safety, which is under the Office of the Chancellor. This change occurred in 2009. The Department is organized into two divisions, Office of the Chief and Field Operations.

The Office of the Chief has five units within this division: Emergency Management/Event Management, Crime Analysis, Personnel Management, Professional Standards and Business Services. The Professional Standards Unit consist of Accreditation/Policy Management, Career Development Coordination, Planning and Internal Affairs. The Business Services consist budgeting, procurement and payroll.

The second division is Field Operations. This division has six units. It is lead by the Assistant Chief of Police. The Uniform Patrol Unit consists of sworn officers who patrol on foot, on bicycles, and in marked patrol cars. The Investigations Unit is responsible for investigating any crimes occurring on property owned or controlled by East Carolina. The unit has three full-time investigators. The Crime Prevention Unit includes one lieutenant, two crime preventions sergeants, one community affairs sergeant and a civilian victim advocate. The Student Patrol unit falls under this division. The Telecommunications Unit includes twelve full-time telecommunicators who handle all emergency and nonemergency telephone calls and walk-in requests for assistance received in the communication centers. The Records Section is responsible for the management and dissemination of all police reports. There is also the Administrative Operations.
