2010 U.S. Congressional campaign

In 2010, Martin challenged Democratic incumbent Russ Carnahan

. Constitution Party nominee Nick Ivanovich and Libertarian nominee Steven Hedrick are also running, with Brian Wallner qualified as a write-in candidate. Martin ran a tough campaign that was one of the most successful Republican campaigns in Missouri's third district. In the end Carnahan narrowly defeated Martin by only 2.2%, about 4,400 votes.

2012 campaigns

On January 31, 2011, Martin announced he would seek the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate in 2012. Martin withdrew from the Senate race on May 9, 2011 and announced his intention to run in the newly drawn 2nd congressional district.

Controversy

While serving as Blunt's chief of staff, Martin was linked to the controversial firing of Scott Eckersley, then Deputy General Counsel for Blunt, because of Eckersley instructions regarding the Sunshine Laws in Missouri, and the established policy that Governor staff emails may not be deleted. Martin eventually resigned as chief of staff.
