Ockenden grew up in Tasmania

He started his hockey career at (and still continues to play with) the North West Hobart Graduates Hockey Club (the Bulldogs), enjoying success in his early days, winning the club's U12 Boys Best and Fairest award in 1997, aged 10. Eddie went on to win another club best and fairest award in U16s, as well as the prestigious 'Greg Brown perpetual trophy for the most dedicated player U17 Boys' back-to-back in 2004 and 2005.

After being awarded an AIS scholarship, Eddie moved to Perth

 and first represented Australia in 2006 and was named best young player at both the 2007 and 2008 Champions Trophy tournament. He represented Australia at the Beijing Olympics, where the team won a bronze medal.

Ockenden is studying for a Bachelor of Business degree at Curtin University.
