After being capped 11 times for Turkey's U-21 side, in January 2010 it was confirmed by Bosnia and Herzegovina's national team manager, Safet Sušić

, that he had contacted Edis Bahtijarević regarding the possibility to play for Bosnia-Herzegovina. It was reported in the Bosnian media that Edis needed some time to think about it and would respond in a matter of days.

On February 5, 2010, Bahtijarević confirmed that he would play for Bosnia national football team.
