Early life

Edward Francis Gallenstein was born in Maysville, Kentucky

 on October 9th, 1922. He was the son of Edward Gallenstein and Luella Greenlee. He had a younger brother Frank. Their father died young, in 1933. Ed served in the United States Navy during World War II

 and saw action in the Aleutian Islands.

Career

Before the war, Gallenstein had worked for several different newspapers in Northern Kentucky. Having been a woodcarver since 1935, he first heard about the National Wood Carvers Association in 1962, and was elected president in 1971. Since then, he has been the Editor-in-Chief of the magazine Chip Chats.
