Effective Theory

An Effective Theory is a theory based on reasonable assumption, if not actual evidence, for the purpose of moving on in an area of study. An effective theory provides a framework to explain certain (observed) effects, without the claim that the theory correctly models the underlying (unobserved) processes. Effective theory is a most useful tool in physics
Physics
Physics is a natural science that involves the study of matter and its motion through spacetime, along with related concepts such as energy and force. More broadly, it is the general analysis of nature, conducted in order to understand how the universe behaves.Physics is one of the oldest academic...

Matter
Matter is a general term for the substance of which all physical objects consist. Typically, matter includes atoms and other particles which have mass. A common way of defining matter is as anything that has mass and occupies volume...

Reality
In philosophy, reality is the state of things as they actually exist, rather than as they may appear or might be imagined. In a wider definition, reality includes everything that is and has been, whether or not it is observable or comprehensible...

In the specific theory known as the effective field theory
Effective field theory
In physics, an effective field theory is, as any effective theory, an approximate theory, that includes appropriate degrees of freedom to describe physical phenomena occurring at a chosen length scale, while ignoring substructure and degrees of freedom at shorter distances .-The renormalization...

one even finds assumptions that certain effects are caused by a field, even if it is known that this is not actually the case. The theory is effective enough for the current study at hand.
