Dunne is the daughter of Mick Dunne
, who was a correspondent with RTÉ. She was born in Dublin, living in Clontarf
. Dunne studied Arts in University College Dublin
, and joined RTÉ in 1980 as a continuity announcer.
She moved to RTÉ News in 1984, and began presenting television news bulletins. Currently, she alternates presentation of RTÉ News: Nine O'Clock
and afternoon newsreading on RTÉ Radio with Anne Doyle
on a seven days on and seven days off basis.
She has also presented a programme on RTÉ lyric fm
called Eileen Dunne's Classic Melodies; the series ended in 2010. Now Eileen Dunne can also be heard on the radio with her new series called The God Slot which airs right after the 10.00 p.m. RTÉ Radio 1 news every Friday which started on Friday 23rd September 2011 and will run for a number of weeks. She sits on the Executive Board of the Association of European Journalists
