. The newspaper was founded in 1948 by Ruperto Villareal Montemayor, it is Nuevo Laredo's second oldest newspaper currently still published, but is the nonstop oldelst newspaper in Nuevo Laredo. According to El Diario the newspaper is the most circulated in Nuevo Laredo.
In 2008, financial difficulties made El Diario change its format to a 16-page tabloid, and becoming a free publication delivered door-to-door to give Nuevo Laredo Companies the result they expect from a massive media.
