Enfield was created in the 1998 electoral distribution as a safe seat for the Australian Labor Party
, replacing the abolished Ross Smith
. It was first contested at the 2002 state election
, where it was won by ALP candidate John Rau
, who had defeated Ralph Clarke, the former member for Ross Smith, in a party preselection ballot. Clarke subsequently contested the election as an independent, but came third, falling 800 votes short of the Liberal candidate. At the 2006 state election
, Clarke decided to contest a Legislative Council seat, where he was given virtually no chance of victory. As a result, Rau extended his margin, easily retaining the seat for Labor.
