Until the 19th century agriculture (especially livestock) dominated the local economy. In the 18th century small-scale home spinning of cotton added to the local economy. In 2000, one quarter of the working population worked in the first sector of the economy.

Geography

Elfingen has an area, , of 4.23 square kilometres (1.6 sq mi). Of this area, 1.94 square kilometre (0.749038187669518 sq mi) or 45.9% is used for agricultural purposes, while2.09 square kilometre (0.806953511458398 sq mi) or 49.4% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.16 square kilometre (0.0617763453748056 sq mi) or 3.8% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.02 km² (4.9 acre) or 0.5% is either rivers or lakes.

Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 0.9% and transportation infrastructure made up 2.8%. Of the agricultural land, 22.7% is used for growing crops and 17.0% is pastures, while 6.1% is used for orchards or vine crops. All the water in the municipality is in rivers and streams.
