She is a married mother of two—daughter Annie and son Gus. Her husband is Doug Westin. It is discovered in season seven of The West Wing that Doug had cheated on Elizabeth with their nanny, but instead of leaving him, Liz continues to support his bid for Congress.

Although there is every indication that Jed and Abbey were caring and loving parents, it was alluded to in season five that Liz had issues with them stemming from their busy careers. Liz implied that many sacrifices were made when she and her sisters were growing up. She turned down an offer to run for Congress herself because she did not want her children to have the childhood she had.
