, he helped many artists progress in their careers, including actress Anna Maria Horsford
and singers Nicholas Ashford and Valerie Simpson
. He served as executive producer of the Public Broadcasting Service
television program Soul!
from 1967 to 1973. He died of lung cancer
in January 1991. After his death, a number of his fellow artists, including writer Amiri Baraka
, gathered in New York City
to hold a performance in his memory.
