. The primary feeder school is Cook Middle School.
The school is named after Elsie Allen
, a master Pomo basketry weaver, author, sage, and member of Sonoma County's indigenous Pomo tribe. Allen authored the book Pomo Basketmaking: A Supreme Art For The Weaver (Naturegraph Publishers, Happy Camp, CA; 87961-016-6.) The school namesake was suggested by long-time Santa Rosa resident, Dan Shay, at the behest of the Santa Rosa City School District.
The school yearbook is called Phoenix and has been published annually in the spring since 1995. The school newspaper goes by the name The Tracker and has been published continuously since fall 1994. The school graduated its first class in 1997

Current Principal Mary Gail Stablein will be starting her 9th year at the school. The Vice Principal is Martin Cassity who was previously an Assistant Principal here and the two assistant principals are Gabriel Albavera and Harriet Gray, former principal of Lawrence Cook Middle School.

The University Center (UC) is a joint endeavor of Santa Rosa City Schools
and Sonoma State University
. This talent development program supports students through the college preparation process with a series of seminars that provide participants with the skills they will need to be successful at the university level. Topics include academic and personal success skills, essay and composition writing, researching colleges for the best fit, and writing successful college and scholarship applications.
Unlike a dual enrollment
program, any credits earned at Sonoma State University are not applied to a student's high school transcript. Students in the UC program will accelerate the completion of core requirements in their freshman and sophomore years by taking six college preparatory courses each year. This will permit time in the junior and senior years to take courses at Sonoma State University and receive transferable university credits.
