Continuing after "Emily Windsnap and the Monster From the Deep", Emily discovers a pretty ring that was moved from the Kraken's lair after he was set free. Emily puts it on but cannot take it off. To her horror she learns that it belonged to the only human King Neptune ever loved, but broke his heart and vanished. Neptune is enraged when he discovers the ring and decrees that humans and merpeople can never be together again. He changes Emily into a semi-mer, something that is not entirely human but not completely mermaid either. Neptune also announces that in three days that she will be forced to live either as a human forever with her mother or as mermaid with her father, without transforming. Emily journeys to find the Castle in the Mist, the place rumored to be able to break the spell and discovered what really happened to Neptune's lover. Along the way, she meets a boy named Aaron, who is also a semi-mer and they both try to help each other.
