Emley is a village in West Yorkshire

between Huddersfield
and Wakefield

It is 4.5 miles (7 km) east of Huddersfield and 5 miles (8 km) west of Wakefield. The village lies in moorland
close to the Emley Moor TV Transmitter. Emley dates from Anglo-Saxon times.
Emley Moor colliery closed in 1985 after a year-long miners' strike, and is now a business park.
Emley has three pubs: "The White Horse", "AFC Emley Sports Bar" and "The Wentworth" and a stone cross in the centre of the village. There is also a grocery/newsagents, and a post-office. The Green Dragon pub closed in 2009 and was demolished soon after. 7 new houses are currently being built on the site.
In line with Yorkshire tradition, there is a brass band
in the village - Emley Brass Band http://www.EmleyBrassBand.co.uk, who rehearse twice a week in the village bandroom.
There is a cross in the centre of the village, which is now only a stump, but was originally a market cross.

A traditional event that happens in Emley is 'The Emley Boundary Walk'. The walk takes place every 7 years to walk the 17 mile boundary of Emley. The event has been going since 1857 and the most recent walk took place in 2007.

Etymology

Bentley Grange was a Thirteenth century mine and forge in the village. There are still bell pits in the area, though these are though to date from later workings.
