Enem (exam)
Encyclopedia
ENEM is a non-mandatory Brazilian national exam, which evaluates high school
education in Brazil
. The test is utilized as a stardard university entrance qualification test. ENEM is the most important exam of its kind in Brazil, with more than 4,5 million test takers in 1.698 different cities.
The test is also used by people desiring to gain points in the Programa Universidade para Todos(ProUni) and, since 2009, the grade has been used both as an admission test to enroll in 23 federal universities and 26 educational institutes, and also as certification for a high school degree in Educação de Jovens e Adultos (EJA). Since 2009 it has had more importance for students who want to attend college.
correction, as the student is required to fulfill some tasks, among them to write a human-rights-based composition.
From 2009 on, the examination will be composed of 180 multiple-choice questions, equally divided into four areas of knowledge: languages, codes and its technologies (plus a written essay); human sciences and its technologies; natural sciences and its technologies and mathematics and its technologies. Due to the size of the test, it will be applied in two consecutive days, one lasting for 290 minutes, and the other lasting for 330.
Even if its purpose is to be a national evaluation exam, the student can use his or her score to be admitted at a university. However, not all universities accept it as the only required admission exam. Usually, private ones, such as PUC-Rio, a major private Brazilian university, accept Enem as an admission exam. Others, such as University of São Paulo
and Faculdade Cásper Líbero
may use the score of the candidate as a way of providing extra points on the final score, depending on the student's performance.
From 2009 on, most Federal Universities of Brazil will use the ENEM as part of their admission exam, either as the whole test itself, or as a first level of the exam, or even just as a way of selecting remaining candidates.
On October 1, 2009, it was announced that the test, which was supposed to take place on October 3 and 4, would be cancelled and postponed to another date within a 45-day period. The decision was made by the Brazilian Ministry of Education after a man offered Brazilian newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo
the original test for R$
500,000 (some US$ 278,000). After speaking to the man, who stated that he obtained the test via a person from Inep (an institute of the Ministry of Education) the newspaper examined the test with no commitment of buying it, and the minister of education, Fernando Haddad
, confirmed the test did leak.
Recently, the Ministry of Education decided to place the new exam in the beginning of December, due not to disturb the exam dates of other universities.
