The Ministry of Environment and Forests through its Department of Environment and the Tamil Nadu Forest Department
is the primary Government organization planning and implementing environmental policy
in the state.
Paryawaran Sachetak Samiti, a national level volunteer organisation is organising various movements to protect nature and save environment at grassroot across India since 1993.

- Urban Water Supply: The Tenth Plan projected a requirement of Rs.28,240 crores for achieving 100 percent coverage with drinking water supply facility. In the Eleventh Five Year Plan special stress has been laid on healthy nutrition, pollution and drinking water.
