Eric Schaps is founder and president of the Developmental Studies Center

Under Schaps’ leadership, DSC’s staff of 60 develops and disseminates literacy and community-building programs for use in elementary and middle schools, and literacy, mathematics, and science enrichment programs for use in after-school environments. DSC’s programs focus on helping schools and after-school sites to create caring, engaging learning environments, in order to help all children acquire the academic skills they need to be productive and successful, and deepen their commitment to values such as kindness, helpfulness, personal responsibility, and respect for others. DSC also provides aligned professional development services to help elementary schools and after-school programs become inclusive learning communities.
For in-school use DSC has created language arts programs that focus on decoding (i.e., phonemic awareness, phonics, and fluency), reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, and writing. Together with its classroom and school-wide community-building approaches, these programs provide strong support for “holistic” school improvement efforts.
For after-school, DSC has developed reading, mathematics, and science enrichment programs specifically designed for those settings and the youth workers who staff them.
DSC’s programs have been adopted in over 100,000 classrooms and after-school sites.

Biography
Schaps is the founder and president of Developmental Studies Center in Oakland, CA. He is the author of three books and 75 book chapters and articles on education, program evaluation, and prevention of problem behaviors. He has been principal investigator on $80,000,000 of grants from public and philanthropic sources. He serves on several boards including the Education Advisory Board of Boys & Girls Clubs of America. He also co-chairs the Program Providers Group for the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL).
