The Escanaba and Lake Superior Railroad is a privately held shortline railroad
that operates in Northeastern Wisconsin
and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan
. The ELS has expanded from the original 65 miles that was purchased in 1978 to over 235 miles as of 2005.
The ELS' main line stretches from Ontonagon, MI to Green Bay, WI. The railroad also connects to Channing, MI, Republic, MI, and Wells, MI, where the railroad is headquartered. Oconto Falls, WI and Marinette, WI/Menominee, MI are connected through branch lines. The E&LS has trackage rights over the Canadian National Railway
from Escanaba, MI to Pembine, WI, connecting with it in 4 locations: Green Bay, Escanaba, Pembine, and Iron Mountain, MI.
It is also known to have the only two surviving Baldwin RF-16
"Shark Noses". However these are kept in storage and away from the public. Wisconsin and Calumet Railroad
