Eskimo (grime beat)
Encyclopedia
'Eskimo' is an instrumental Grime
beat by the East London producer and MC Wiley
, first released on 12" vinyl in 2002.
It is widely believed within the Grime
music community that 'Eskimo', and the tracks by Wiley
that followed it that year, pioneered the Grime
style of music, and as a consequence to this contemporary producers followed suit to create music characteristically similar to Wiley's 'Eskibeat' sound; The track became a landmark in the genre's history and marker of its origin.
The original Eskimo track features voice samples from the Disney PIxar movie 'Toy Story'
, for example, from the vending machine toy: "the claw is my master". Other samples on the track include a voice which seems indiscernible, but when played in reverse says "Roll Deep", the name of the Grime music group of which Wiley was a key founder.
'Eskimo' was also followed by various other incarnations of the track, such as 'Eskimo 2', 'Eskimo 3' and 'Pulse Eskimo' which is a mash up
of 'Eskimo' and Musical Mob's 'Pulse X', produced by Wiley's fellow Roll Deep
member, Skepta
.
