The project was met with much controversy, stemming from the multiple accusations of the construction as an apparent impediment to the wildlife growth on a local scale. Regardless, the project was greenlit in August 2011, and is expected to begin construction proper in October of the same year, involving approximately 30 months total in development time.
The stadium project doesn't includes support, upgrades and maintenance to the wildlife of the surrounding area. The intended site of the project is the last urban forest remaining in Monterrey, which has a live river, endemic species, with 8 of them in special protection and centennial trees. The loss of this forest will worsen Monterrey’s deficit of green areas: 3.56 m2/hab vs 10-15 m2/hab recommended by the World Health Organization.
Environmentalist groups have declared that the project doesn’t meet the environmental standards of Mexico. It has obtained the necessary permits and passed the first legal audiences in court only due to the weaknesses of Mexico’s regulatory and judiciary systems, but most importantly due to the political clout of Femsa. These permits are at risk of getting revoked.
Since 2010 FEMSA is one of the major shareholders of Heineken (just after the Heineken family) with 20% of the shares. The destruction of the forest will adversely impact Heineken’s commitments on environmental care and community involvement. The Centre for Research on Multinational Corporations (“SOMO”) pointed out in the context of its 2010 report on Heineken’s controversial business practices that “the business relationship between Heineken and Femsa is such that Heineken has a responsibility to avoid causing or contributing to the adverse impacts of the project, to which it is associated through its commercial interests and its business relationship”.
There are other alternative locations still inside the city, with access to public transportation. Environmentalists declared to support the construction of a new stadium, just not in Monterrey last urban forest but somewhere else.
The project is planned to have a capacity of few over 50,000 people, an authentic grass surface, Suites, a club-themed Restaurant, a club lounge, and high-end interior and exterior design.
