Basketball has been a Summer Olympics sport for men consistently since 1936. Prior to its inclusion as a medal sport, it was held as demonstration event in 1904 and 1932, both in the United States. Women's basketball was played in the Olympics only since 1976....

. The first tournament was held in 2000 for men's teams only; starting in 2004, tournaments have been held for both men and women.

The competing teams are the host country, the host country of that year's Olympics and the reigning world and intercontinental champions, minus the United States men's team (if they are the Americas champions). The United States women's team did not participate in the 2004 event even though it was the then-reigning world champion
